Team Climb The Height Of Mt Everest 10 Times To Honour 10 Years In Afghanistan

Monday, September 5, 2011

Over the past five weeks a team have climbed the equivalent height of Mt Everest ten times up Scottish Munros to honour the 10th anniversary of the conflict in Afghanistan. On 4th September 2011 they reached the summit of their 200th Munro since they began on 1st August. The challenge, known as the Munro Mission, is being completed as part of the DecAid Appeal which was set up by volunteers under the age of 25 to recognise that over half of the British service men and women who have died in Afghanistan over the past decade have been aged between 18 and 25.

Two of the team have taken to the hills as part of the Appeal in an attempt to conquer all of Scotland’s 283 Munros in just 49 days. They will complete the 1600 mile route without the use of motorised transport. The challenge has been cited by explorer Sir Ranulph Fiennes as “one of the most demanding physical challenges within the UK”. The team will complete the challenge on 18th September by which time they will have ascended 81 vertical miles.

Importantly, throughout the challenge the team are dedicating each Munro to service men and women who have lost their lives in Afghanistan. They have therefore been joined by many of the bereaved families every day of the challenge. Mr Adams, whose son Kyle died in Afghanistan in 2009, joined the team when they were in the Cairngorms and said “I really don’t have the words to describe how wonderful these young people are. I have such admiration for the enormity of their challenge.”

All funds raised will be donated in full by the DecAid Appeal to the service charities  Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Families Association (SSAFA) and The British Limbless Ex-Servicemen Association (BLESMA).

This challenge is being supported by  Brewin Dolphin, one of the largest independent private client investment managers in the UK, and Nite Watches. For more information or to get involved please visit www.DecAid.co.uk
