HRH The Duchess of Cornwall to attend the national remembrance service to honour 10 years in Afghanistan

Wednesday, September 21, 2011

On Sunday 2nd October 2011 HRH The Duchess of Cornwall will attend a service in Salisbury Cathedral to honour the 10th anniversary of the conflict in Afghanistan.  The service, which is called “The Light for Life Ceremony” is being organised by the charity appeal DecAid of which The Duchess is Royal Patron. The focal point of the service will be when a candle is lit for each British service man or woman who has lost their life in the conflict. Many of their family and friends are expected to attend. There will also be an avenue of young trees placed along the main path to the cathedral bearing the names of those who have lost their lives over the past decade.

The service organisers, DecAid, are all volunteers under the age of 25, who wish to show their support for the Armed Forces. The team have organised a series of events over the past year which have already raised over £100,000 for two service charities: SSAFA Forces Help and BLESMA.  Commander-in-Chief of Land Forces, General Sir Nick Parker, who is also a patron of DecAid, will give the main address. Before the service, the Somerset Army Cadet Force band will perform in the Cathedral close.

If you would like to attend the service there are still places available and tickets are free of charge. Please contact Rupert Laing on 07709 430 127 or email decaid@live.co.uk  . There will also be spaces available on the day.
